Wellbeing, important for life and livelihoods
This #WorldWellbeingWeek we thought it apt to share our thoughts on this important topic and how it relates to recruitment. Job hunters are placing more and more value on a workplace that acknowledges and invests in staff wellbeing. Unsurprisingly, those employers who are making wellbeing a strategic priority, are reaping the benefits. They are experiencing greater productivity, increased staff retention and are attracting the best candidates.
Let’s explore what people are looking for and what initiatives the best employers are introducing, as a result.
Openness and discussion
Some of the larger businesses we work with offer benefits such as Mental Health First Aiders and Employee Assistance Programmes to ensure that team members have someone to confide in, and the ability to access services such as counselling, that can help people with trauma, stress or anxiety. Companies are adopting open cultures, where line managers are encouraged to have regular one-to-one catch ups – not just about meeting targets – but also being open about managing workloads in a positive, supportive way. Good companies are being transparent with their communications, which takes the worry of the unknown away, and helps people to feel connected, valued and engaged.
Wellbeing provision
Simply having the freedom to take a break, preferably in a dedicated “time out” space can be all it takes to improve workplace wellbeing. Great companies provide annual health checks, private medical cover and flu vaccines, healthy snacks and lunches, alongside activities such as yoga, wellbeing workshops, meditation, awareness topic talks and social events. All inspire people to look after themselves and promote opportunities for togetherness and encourage a feeling of belonging.
Flexibility
There’s an increasing acceptance that people can work effectively from home, and technology has developed around this. The adoption of hybrid working, and flexible working hours helps people to better cope with the demands of busy lives. People benefit from this flexibility and often over-deliver productivity-wise, in appreciation of this privilege.
Appreciation and development
Even a simple thank you makes people feel appreciated, and that feeling is essential to wellbeing. Knowing that a company is people centric and has awareness and understanding of what is being achieved, how people are contributing, and what can be done to develop them to be their best, is recruitment gold! Not only that, it’s fundamental to the future success of any business.
