On this National Writing Day, we’re here to help you craft the perfect CV that will showcase your skills and experiences in the best light possible. We detail the sections needed to make a good CV along with sharing some tops to help your CV stand out.


Why your CV matters


Your CV is often the first point of contact between you and a potential employer. A well-written CV will stand you out from the crowd and can open doors to for interviews and job placements ultimately leading you on the path to career success.


Key Elements of a Good CV

  1. Personal Information

Start off your CV with your name, contact information, and a professional summary that highlights your key skills and experiences. Make sure to include any relevant certifications or qualifications here as well.

  1. Work Experience

List your work experience in reverse chronological order, starting with your most recent job. Include the name of the company, your job title, and a brief description of your responsibilities and achievements in each role.

  1. Education

Highlight your educational background, including any higher education or professional certifications you have obtained. Be sure to include the name of the institution, the dates attended, and any relevant coursework or projects.

  1. Skills

Include a section that showcases your key skills, both technical and soft. This is your chance to demonstrate to potential employers what sets you apart from other candidates. Perhaps show some creativity here by demonstrating them graphically with a star rating out of 5 or similar.

  1. Achievements

Don’t forget to include any notable achievements or awards you have received throughout your career. This is a great way to show off your successes and demonstrate your value as a potential employee.

  1. References or testimonials

Always include two references either previous employers or character references, if you have a Linkedin profile where you have been left kudos include this link also.


Submitting your CV

Always make sure you proof read and sense check your CV for any errors or omissions, if possible ask someone to assist you. Team Brampton have years of experience and widely share their knowledge to candidates on improving a CV.

Be sure to send your cv with a covering letter. Your covering letter needs to be amended to include why you are applying for the role and must highlight any skills or experience that match the person specification/job description of the role you are applying for.
